How to Style a Sectional Like an Interior Designer (Without Sacrificing Comfort)

There’s a common belief that if you want your living room to look like it belongs in a magazine, you need a beautiful sofa with two perfectly styled accent chairs. While I absolutely love that look, I also know that’s not how many of us actually live.
In our house, the living room is where we pile up for movie nights, read books on rainy afternoons, cheer on our favorite teams, and simply spend time together. For a lot of families, a sectional just makes more sense.
The good news is that today’s sectionals are nothing like the oversized, bulky ones from years ago. Many have clean lines, beautiful fabrics, and timeless designs that look every bit as elevated as a traditional sofa.
How To Style a Living Room with a Sectional
Styling with a sectional can be confusing for many of my clients. Here are the design principles I come back to whenever I’m decorating around one.
1. Start with the Right Rug
One of the biggest mistakes I see is pairing a large sectional with a rug that’s too small. When that happens, the sectional instantly feels oversized—even if it’s the perfect size for the room.

I always recommend choosing a rug that allows at least the front legs of the sectional to sit comfortably on it. If the rug is larger and you can fit all legs of the furniture on the rug, that works well also. The rug should visually anchor the seating area rather than look like it’s floating underneath the coffee table.

A larger rug creates balance, makes the room feel more intentional, and actually helps the sectional look lighter instead of heavier.
2. Add Curved Accent Chairs for Balance

When I'm styling a living room with a sectional, I almost always like to add one or two curved accent chairs. Since sectionals have long, straight lines, a rounded chair helps soften the room and creates a beautiful sense of balance.
Curved chairs also make the seating area feel more inviting. Instead of every seat facing the television, they encourage conversation and create a space where family and friends naturally want to gather. It's a simple change that makes the room feel more thoughtfully designed.

I love using chairs in soft linen or boucle fabrics because they add another layer of texture while keeping the overall look light and timeless. If you have the space, place two matching chairs across from the sectional, or use a single chair with a small side table and floor lamp to create a cozy reading nook.
3. Choose the Right Coffee Table
When I'm styling a sectional, I almost always reach for a round coffee table first. It softens all of the straight lines, makes the room feel more open, and improves the flow around the seating area. It's one of those simple design choices that instantly makes a living room feel more balanced and professionally designed.

While rectangular and oval coffee tables can work beautifully in some layouts, I find that round coffee tables are the most versatile choice for sectionals because they create better traffic flow, add softness, and make the entire seating area feel more welcoming.

4. Layer Your Lighting

If you've read some of my other blog posts, you probably know I'm a little obsessed with layered lighting. It's one of the easiest ways to make a living room feel warm and inviting.

Since a sectional is usually the largest piece of furniture in the room, I don't like relying on just one overhead light. I always think in layers—starting with a ceiling fixture, then adding a floor lamp, a table lamp, and a few candles for a soft evening glow.

To me, lighting is what brings a room to life. It's one of those finishing touches that makes a space feel cozy, comfortable, and beautifully designed without anyone quite knowing why.
5. Keep the Color Palette Calm
One thing I've learned is that your sectional is probably the biggest investment in your living room, so I always recommend choosing one in a timeless, neutral fabric.

A neutral sectional gives you so much flexibility and won't feel dated a few years from now. That doesn't mean your room has to be all beige or boring.

Instead, I like to bring in color, warmth and personality through the layers around it. Think textured pillows, cozy throws and decorative accents.
The best part? If you ever want to change the look of your living room, you can simply swap out a few accessories for a completely fresh feel. It's much easier—and far less expensive—than replacing a sectional.
6. Bring the Outdoors In
This is probably one of my favorite decorating secrets because it’s also one of the easiest.

A large faux olive tree, a vase filled with eucalyptus stems, or even a basket with natural textures can completely change the feeling of a room.

Plants soften all the clean lines of a sectional and make the space feel fresh, relaxed, and lived in.
Whenever I finish styling a room, greenery is almost always the last thing I add because it somehow makes everything else come to life.
7. The Biggest Mistake I See with Sectionals
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make with sectionals is thinking they have to fill every inch of the room. It can be tempting to add more furniture or decor just because there's empty space, but I've found that a little breathing room actually makes a space feel more beautiful.
When I'm styling a living room, I like to leave enough space to comfortably walk around the furniture and resist the urge to put something against every wall. Those open areas help the room feel lighter, more balanced, and much more inviting. Embrace the negative space!

Final Thoughts
To me, the most beautiful living rooms aren’t the ones that stay perfectly styled all day. They’re the ones where blankets get unfolded for movie night, kids pile onto the sectional after school, friends linger over coffee, and the room feels just as welcoming at the end of the day as it did in the morning. That’s the kind of home I’m always trying to create.
